How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant enabled us to highlight and prioritize the adoption of senior dogs. These are the dogs who tend to be overlooked because of their advanced age or their medical/health conditions. By being able to waive the adoption fee, we were able to place them into loving homes faster than history has shown us in the past. To date, we have placed six dogs with this grant, with two more set to be available in the coming weeks. We have no doubt that, with this added incentive, they too will be in loving homes in record time.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Angie (first photo) came to us as an owner-surrender after being turned away for an owner-requested euthanasia at our local Animal Control.

Animal Control contacted us in the hopes that we could intervene and help this poor, pitiful pug who still had a lot of spunk. Once Angie was in our possession, we were able to determine through vet records that she had once been a very loved family member in her early years. She was kept current on all her vaccinations and had annual dentals to help keep her teeth nice and clean.

Sadly, as often happens, her owner passed away and the family took over. Unfortunately, Angie was relegated to the back yard with very little interaction or love. As she aged, her health quickly began to deteriorate and, with the lack of routine vet care, she started to suffer.

Rather than look into helping her, her family decided it was time to have her put to sleep. Instead of taking her to a veterinary clinic to have it done in a nice, quiet setting, they opted for the local Animal Control facility.

Fortunately, due to a change in policy, owner-requested euthanasia is no longer permitted there unless it is medically deemed that there is no other treatment option. That is where Angie’s sadness ended and her new life began.

With many senior animals, there tends to be a myriad of ailments. Angie’s condition was no different. At age 14, she struggled with some pretty significant arthritis, hearing issues, a horrible skin infection, and some sight impairment due to corneal scarring on her left eye. Despite all of the above, Angie had a hearty appetite and a zest for life.

As the various medications began to take effect, it became apparent that we needed to start looking seriously for a home for her. Angie obviously still had some good years left. We began our search first by posting her and reaching out to some breed-specific rescues in the hopes they might have someone looking for a dog just like Angie.

As luck would have it, her forever home came to us (second photo). A more perfect match could not have been found! With the Kia Pet Adoption Grant, we were able to happily waive her adoption fee, thus allowing her new adopter to take her into her home immediately and begin the forever-after that sweet Angie so deserved!
